This komon tenugui was designed with chain motif. One ring links to the other, the chains connect to each other without ending. This Japanese traditional chain design is called "Yoshiwara Tsunagi", was came from Yoshiwara (name of the town in Tokyo). Many Yukata (summer Kimono) uses this design patterns still now.
